I decided to put together a guide for Green Revolution protesters about how best to frustrate those sent to maim and kill them as well as how to get treatment for injuries without getting in trouble. Disclaimer: I do not recommend using any of these tactics and I present them for educational purposes. I am not responsible if anyone uses these methods to injure or harm other people.

- The Basiji are using motorbikes to track down protesters and club them. One method of dealing with them is to lead them into an ambush. Collect stout pieces of wood that are the size of a broomstick and have fellow protesters hide behind cars parked on the street with them. Send out decoys to get the Basiji to chase them and have the protesters lead them to the ambush. When the motorbikes ride by, the allies ram the wood through the front or back wheel. It will either collapse the wheel by breaking the spokes or bring the wheel to a screeching halt, throwing the driver and rider and leaving them defenseless against an attack. Metal posts used in fencing also work very well as a replacement for the wood. Also be prepared with a blunt object to set upon them when they are thrown from the motorbike to disable them and take their weapons and equipment. If they are equipped with radios, you should take the radios and monitor them for communications between government forces. This will give you advance warning of where they will be so that you can avoid them or set another ambush for them.

- Another method to ambush the Basiji is to get a strong rope and string it up at neck-level across the street you are preparing for the ambush on. Your decoys should duck their heads to run under the rope and then when the rope dismounts the two riders, allies should attack them to disable them and take their equipment and weapons. A suitable replacement for rope is strong wire of some kind. Telephone and electrical wires will work as well. The key is to dismount the riders so that they will be vulnerable to protesters on foot. Once they are dismounted the riders will likely be disabled.

- If you are lucky enough to catch government vehicles parked alone, this is a good time to disable them. A common myth is that sugar in the gas tank will stop a car but this is actually not the case. The sugar lays in the gas tank like sand and it can take weeks or months for enough of it to be pulled into the engine to do enough damage to stop it, if it will stop the engine at all. However, water in a gas tank will stop a car in its tracks and it can be carried without suspicion since protesters obviously need to drink water. Water is heavier than gasoline and it is not combustible so it is likely to be drawn into the engine once the gasoline in the fuel line is used up and at that point it will kill the engine. That vehicle will not be used to harass protesters for a while. Also remember to use a generous quantity of water for the best results.

- Taking out a vehicle's tires is always a good way to sidetrack a chase. The police use spike strips to slow down those drivers who run from them and create a disturbance. One can create their own spike strips by collecting boards and dozens of nails and they can be used time and time again. Hammer the nails through the board so that there are many nails sticking out of the opposite side of the board. Once you have the nails hammered through, you can use the improvised spike strips in one of two ways. The first is to use them as part of an ambush. Have your decoy bring a pursuit vehicle down your street and into the ambush zone. When the pursuit vehicle approaches, throw the spike strips. With some luck the tire failure will cause them to wreck. Even if that isn't the case, the holes will cause the tire(s) to deflate and immobilize the vehicle and the govt will have to send a tow truck for it. The occupants can be disarmed when the vehicle comes to a stop and the vehicle can be rendered useless for a significant amount of time by opening the hood and pulling out important electrical components like the distributor cap. The second tactic to use the stop sticks is to deploy them in an area without a particular chase going on. Wait for a government vehicle to approach the stop sticks and when they see them they will exit the car to investigate them or remove them. Causing them to stop and exit the vehicle has created your window of opportunity to subdue them. Conceal yourself and your allies around the stop sticks and descend on them when they exit the vehicle.

- Do not throw rocks because it is a waste of effort. A thrown rock rarely exceeds 60 miles per hour. Instead, make a sling by tying two pieces of rope to a piece of durable cloth or leather to act as a basket for your projectile. Tie one end of the rope to your ring finger on your throwing hand and hold onto the other rope's end. Place your projectile (piece of stone, etc.) in the basket. Swing the sling in a circle to build momentum and then, when the sling is moving fast, flick your wrist and let go of the loose end of the rope to fire. If you practice you should be able to hit a target from a respectable distance. The major advantage of using a sling instead of throwing a rock is that the sling will send it towards the target at more than 100 miles per hour while the maximum speed for the average person's arm is perhaps 50 to 60 miles per hour. This video is a good example of how to use a sling.

- A classic tool of protesters around the world is the Molotov cocktail. Fill a glass bottle with gasoline, stuff a rag into the top, turn it upside down so that some of the gas soaks into the wick and light it. Heave it at your target and make a break for it.

- I have seen several pictures of protesters struggling with government agents that are armed with guns. A word to the wise: don't go to the rally without a real or improvised knife. If you don't have a real manufactured knife, you can make one out of a sharpened, durable substance like metal or a turkey bone, etc. Many times creativity can overcome a lack of resources. Knives are much better-suited to close-quarters combat. If your fellow protesters are carrying knives the struggle can go as follows: first you could use your knife to neutralize your opponent during the one-on-one struggle and second, your fellow protesters can come in close while you struggle with your attacker and use their knives to neutralize him.

- According to trusted sources, the Basiji have stationed themselves in the hospitals and are taking down names for use as lists for retribution later. They have also now surrounded foreign embassies that had been offering protection and medical care to injured protesters and they are arresting anyone trying to enter the embassies. My thought is to find civilian doctors that are sympathetic to the Green Revolution and, thus, won't report their injuries to the Basiji.

- In another act of preparation for major round-ups, the authorities used paintballs on doors to mark them positively as a place where someone that should be arrested for interrogation, prison or, worse, torture resides.Green Revolutionaries should frequently check their doors for paintball markings and if they find any they should try to remove them with gasoline or some other substance.

- Remove any and all street signs and directional markers. Any militia or troops that are brought in from outside the area will find it difficult to navigate and they will be vulnerable when they are disoriented. You can then move to disable their vehicles and weapons or neutralize them.

I welcome all readers to add methods for self-defense in the comments section and I will be praying for the success of the Green Revolution and for their safety.

Even tanks can be stopped. Lessons from Hungary, Afgan. & elsewhere.

Steel rod between sprocket and track will stop movement.

Low lying electrical wires can do interesting things. Sometimes only the tank's antenna needs to make contact.

Once the tank is stopped - a small fire underneath will cause the crew to want to exit in a hurry. Bigger fire - they may not have time.

Yeah, that fire will turn the tank into a frying pan.

Low-lying electrical wires are another nice, difficult to detect trap for a tank. They could dig anti-tank ditches if they were outside the city but, unfortunately, that's no longer an option since the tanks have made it to the city center.

Also, if the protesters can capture some grenades the frag grenades would be perfect for use on an abandoned tank. Pull the pin, flip the spoon and send that bastard down the barrel of the main turret gun. BOOM!

Bow and arrow anyone? Nearly silent, effective, can fire several well aimed shots per minute.

I don't know how available bow & arrows are for Iranians but if they can get hold of bow and arrows they would be excellent guerrilla warfare tools. As you pointed out, they are silent and very accurate. You can shoot, melt away, pop up and shoot again.

The good "toys" are those to be discussed after successfully using and retaining possesion of them for future use.

Ever think of just shutting off the water?

Finding the source of the water for the firehoses the Basiji and other anti-riot forces are using is an excellent idea because any protester that is an engineer can screw it up for hours, if not days.

Are propane cylinders available in Iran?

That's a good question, probably better-suited for Dennis. I suspect they are since Iran seems to have natural gas deposits as well as oil deposits.

A compressed gas cylinder (welding O2 or inert gas) let loose would make an awesome alley-clearing torpedo.

When some nefarious people were threatening my family, I got really good with a rolling pin, practiced on a roll of carpet... Rolling pins are designed of course for close combat, but then my husband added that if I strategically hide, then I can hit them in the back of the neck with an upward motion. At any rate it could crack some heads with the right amount of force.

Rolling pins are truly excellent blunt objects, particularly those made out of dense materials. They pack quite a wallop and are much more dangerous than your average cartoonist of olden years would have you believe, drawing an angry mammie running about with a rolling pin in hand threatening to brain the first one she catches. ;-)
